My room was very small and the king size bed was just two twins pushed together and madeup with the linens from the twin beds, not only was there an uncomfortable crack in the middle of the bed but also no way to keep covered with the small sheets provided. The pool area, sauna and exercise room lacked any staff and if something was needed such as a towel, or wanting the massage jets in the pool on I would have to call down to the front desk and if I was lucky they might show up an hour later. The sauna did not work at all and looked as if it was being used for storage. Once when I requested a towel for the pool I was given a wet used one. The weather was unusally cool for that time of year and the pool could have and should have been warmer. The exersice room consisted of a couple of treadmills, to me that does not warrant being called an exercise room. In my room the hot water was only luke warm most of the time and tv cable went out a few times. I didn't find the staff to be friendly at all, they would answer questions when asked but that was about it. The best part of the whole hotel experince was the breakfast buffet. It was really good and had a decsent selection of food. The dining area was crowed with to many table pushed close together which made getting in and out of your seat difficult. I must say that the condition of the hotel was good, it looks to have been recently remodeled and everthing looked new.

This hotel, and essentially every other one in Rio that I found on online travel website, looks exactly as advertised. I was impressed when I arrived at the location to find that everything was so accurate. Hotel Astoria Palace is RIGHT on Copacabana Beach in an excellent location. The beach itself is more amazing than the pictures suggest--it is paradise. The front desk at the hotel, unfortunately, was not even remotely helpful. The lobby internet did not work and the staff were very unapologetic and I had to specifically ask for suggestions for nearby internet cafes. They vaguely suggested one, and were completely incorrect as to its location, not to mention that there were others much closer by. The TV in our room never worked and they never fixed it or compensated us. They were also unhelpful with tour and sightseeing suggestions. Fortunately, there was a tour desk located in the lobby, and their Corcovado tour was excellent (even though they were affiliated with this hotel). The rooms were small but adequate. Noise was never a problem. The rooftop pool seems to be permanently out of service. Maid service was poor (I had to clean the drains myself, and toiletries were never replaced). The hotel's complimentary breakfast was incredible, absolutely delicious and offered a huge variety.back for us. If you are careful, this is a lovely city to visit and a decent hotel to stay in.
